WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Regardless of your experiences getting hired, you, as a student, have only had limited opportunities to develop skills and gain experiences. That’s why we dedicate our time and effort into evaluating the skills, and contextual knowledge you can bring to the table.
We don’t expect perfection, as MUN Secretariat are ultimately student volunteer positions and meant to provide learning opportunities. This means we’re looking for the quality of your experiences rather than the quantity. We want to see that you have the commitment, competence, and integrity needed – among other virtues. 

OUR INTERVIEW GOALS

1. HOLISTIC SKILLS ASSESSMENT:

Being a Secretariat isn’t inherently difficult; but to truly succeed one will need a holistic skill set that comes from being a mature and developed person. Their skills should encompass a wide array of technical skills and competencies, self-management skills. and most importantly, the ability to communicate and coordinate alongside a team.

2. Determining PERSONALITY AND VALUES:

We also want to know how your motives, values, and goals might allign with other prospective applicants. During our interview process, we’ll be actively considering how to match a team with shared core values, and has a diverse set of perspectives and skills – a critical factor in quality work.

3. IT’s a learning experience:

Regardless of the hiring outcomes, we want to make sure that you learn from this experience. Model UN has the capacity to prepare you for the future in ways that few organizations genuinely pursue.
Every step of your experience is an opportunity for us to better equip you for you next application and interview; We hope you’ll join us to create an educational experience out of the process.

What to expect

“Too many MUN interviews are confounded by an interviewer trying to feel smart”
  1. A long interview: You can expect that your interview will be approximately an hour long.
  2. No trick questions: i.e. “How many cars do you think are in downtown Vancouver?” – You’re applying to be a RichMUN Secretariat, not be an urban planner, or a professional jelly bean counter!
  3. Dynamic questions: If you mention that your involvement in an activity has contributed to your general leadership skills, we want you to tell us more!
  4. Demonstrate your skills: If you told us that you are skilled with WordPress, writing backgrounders, or planning events, we may want to see you in action! We may ask you to send us a copy of your previous work or ask you to create something during the interview.
  5. Quality of skills, not quantity of experiences: Your interview will NOT be based on a checklist of experiences, or the length of your resume, but rather as accurate of a skills assessment as possible.
  6. 2-part interview: Beyond your application and your interview, it’s likely that we’ll want to schedule a follow-up interview with you to address some specific details we may have missed.

INTERVIEW PREPARATIONS

BODY LANGUAGE

> Sit straight with good posture
> Maintain reasonable eye contact
> Speak with your hands too; Don’t be a statue! 
> Have an open posture, instead of being closed off

SPOKEN RESPONSES

> Take a moment to figure out your response
> Provide context with your response
> Explain why your experience is meaningful
> Wrap it up by re-stating your main point

OUR DRESS CODE

Dress to impress yourself – clothing can make you feel confident. 
Dressing formal is not always an interview standard. Interviewers are far more interested in your skills and personality than your clothes.
> Dress to show that you care by putting some effort into preparing. In other words, don’t wear clothes you would casually wear to see friends 5 minutes before. (Semi-casual works well)

IT’s a conversation

Ultimately, it’s a conversation about how you could be a good fit. While you may be concerned about your qualifications, focus on the positives; We understand that everyone has weaknesses, and we’re not going though a checklist of reasons to reject you. 
We would much rather hear about how you can succeed than how you might fail!
